Get back to making woodchips with clubs again

By Kelly Umenhofer

Since early 2020, woodworking groups have had to move their operations online or cancel them completely due to the pandemic. With COVID-19 state restrictions being lifted, many groups began to meet again in person. Here’s a list of clubs and groups that have since reopened their workshops and resumed in-person meetings. Let’s get back to carving with each other!

2017 Folk Arts Festival and Carvers Show Finds New Home, Success

In 2017, The Eastern Oklahoma Woodcarvers Association made a bold decision to relocate their annual event of 40 years from Tulsa, Okla., to nearby Broken Arrow. This big gamble resulted in a big success. Their new location, just blocks away from the burgeoning Rose District, an upscale area of reclaimed and repurposed old buildings, was an immediate win.

This traditionally all-wood-carving annual event was rebranded as the Folk Arts & Woodcarver Show & Sale. “The results were surprising; a 30 percent increase in exhibitors as well as a 20 percent increase in public attendance,” show spokesman, Bill Payne, said.

A carver’s club in Mystic, Conn., celebrates the Mayflower anniversary in style

Looking ahead to the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage in 2020, members of the Mystic Carvers Club of Mystic, Conn., have created a carving mosaic. The work of 30 people, the two-sided piece comprises relief scenes on the front, called The Pilgrims’ Odyssey, while the back is chip-carved with the Mayflower Compact (The Pilgrims’ Legacy). The frame represents the ship.

This display, along with two explanatory banners,  was shown at Plymouth, Mass., and was extremely well-received by an audience of more than 600 people. It is currently located at the General Society of Mayflower Descendants House in Plymouth, where its travels to other sites will be coordinated.

The Wilson Park Woodcarvers celebrate their 25th with a project equal parts old and new

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Wilson Park Senior Center Woodcarvers and Burners Club in Milwaukee, Wis., members created a 42″ (1.1m)-square wooden quilt held together by a shadow box and frame. The quilt, similar to one created 25 years ago, includes two of the original contributors, Harold Kinas and Frank Penne. This year’s quilt incorporates relief carving, caricature carving, chip carving, and pyrography, and took five months to complete. Both quilts hang side by side in the main room
of the Center.

The Wilson Park Senior Center Woodcarvers and Burners Club was formed in 1992 with about 50 members. They currently have around 45 members, with a wide range of skills. Said spokesperson Ed Thomas, “Newcomers are always welcome.”

For these patients, nothing says Christmas like ornaments made with love

For the past three years, the Cumberland Valley Woodcarvers Club in Chambersburg, Pa., has teamed up with the “Elves of Hope” each Christmas season to provide gift bags to cancer patients going through chemotherapy. A 2017 patient favorite was handcarved ornaments. Last year, the Woodcarvers Club made a total of 70 ornaments; some patterns they designed and some, said representative Kim Hykes, came from “their favorite woodcarving magazine…Woodcarving Illustrated!”

For more information on the Cumberland Valley Woodcarvers Club, contact Kim Hykes at kimhykes2800@gmail.com or visit www.fortchambers.com/httpdocs/CVCarvers/CVCarvers.htm.

There’s something for everyone at Artistry in Wood

The Dayton Carvers’ Artistry in Wood show has bounced back after a move and is reasserting its status as one of the best carving shows in America. In its second year at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio, the 2017 event took place on October 14-15 and welcomed 3,500 guests and 189 exhibitors. In other words, it’s a huge room full of fantastic artwork and the people who make and love it!

If you’re into woodworking, this show has something for you. About two-thirds of the exhibits are related to carving–artists, tool vendors, wood vendors, pattern people, etc.–but scrolling, turning, and woodworking are growing segments. Children are not just welcome but have an area where they can hammer birdhouses and toolboxes to their hearts’ content. Activities for adults include a silent raffle and a full slate of demonstrations.

The staff of Woodcarving Illustrated collaborated with the show to create an exciting series of demonstrations throughout the show. Among them, Dylan Goodson talked about carving realistic people, Mike Allen carved an acanthus leaf, Terry Brasher explained how to carve eyes, and Judy Gale Roberts described intarsia techniques. In addition, Jim Shubert explained how to rehab old tools and Scott Phillips of The American Woodshop demo’d a number of new tools.

The competition at Artistry in Wood is known for the excellence of its entries, and this year was no different. The award for Best of Show went to Fred Zavadil for his nearly lifesized angel bust. Al Jordan won the Second Best of Show award, and Third Best of Show went to Sherry Jones. These photos are courtesy of Artistry in Wood; to see all of the winners, visit the show’s website.

The WCI booth was busy during the show. We celebrated the 20th anniversary of Woodcarving Illustrated magazine with cake each day, and it went fast! In addition, we had several booth guests. Lori Dickie, the author of Quick & Cute Carving Patterns, demonstrated carving wooden eggs into caricatures. Wayne and Jacob Fowler, the authors of Woodworkers Pattern Book, showed numerous examples of their complexly scrolled animal portraits. We were proud that many of our book authors were at the show, including Floyd Rhadigan, Bruce Nicholas, Tom Hindes, and Judy Gale Roberts. We also presented the Woodcarver of the Year Award to Janet Cordell.

For a show that truly has more in one room than you can see or do in a weekend, head to Ohio for Artistry in Wood!

Artistry in Wood takes place every October at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio. Visit the Dayton Carvers Guild’s website (www.daytoncarvers.com) for more information. To learn about more carving shows, visit our online calendar: woodcarvingillustrated.com/calendar-of-events.

For a wonderful weekend of fellowship, education, and fantastic carvings, plan a fall trip to the Wisconsin River Woodcarvers show

If you live in the upper Midwest and you’re looking to spend a weekend with friendly folks and their high-quality carvings, put the Wisconsin River Woodcarvers show on your list of places to go. It takes place at the Holiday Inn in Stevens Point, Wisc., every September, and it’s well worth the trip.

The show is one of the largest club shows in America, with more than 100 exhibitors and more than 1,200 visitors. Seven clubs from around the state support the show, and another couple are talking about joining the fun next year. So there’s a huge variety of things to see and people to chat with, plus several suppliers so you can pick up some tools and wood, as well as a well-supported raffle.

Hourly demonstrations take place in a comfortable room near the showroom. The club provides cameras and screens so the demos are easy to see. This year’s selection included chip carving with Neil Rippey, spoon carving with Karen Henderson, air brushing with Tony Resop, sharpening with Denny Neubauer, woodburning with Echo Keller, carving a female face with Adina Huckins, and “Wood to Tree” with John Krantz.

Adina Huckins and Dylan Goodson served as the judges for the competition, which had nearly 300 entries. Carol Leavy won both the Overall Best in Show and Best in Show – Advanced Awards for her relief portrait. Paul Murphy and Susan Meyer also won Best in Show Awards. To see all of the winners, visit the club’s website.

The club hosts a truly enjoyable banquet on the show’s Saturday night. There wasn’t a program, other than sincere and heartfelt thanks to the show organizers and guests, but there was plenty of talk with the friendly club members, and the door prizes were a hoot. The club gathers ample donations from the community, including dozens of bottles of wine, cases of beer and soda, household products ranging from cleaning supplies to toilet paper, as well as generous contributions of the more usual sort from show participants—tools, gift certificates, patterns, books, etc. At the end, anyone who wishes is welcome to take home a 10-pound bag of local potatoes! It was a delightful and relaxing evening.

For a wonderful weekend of fellowship, education, and fantastic carvings, plan a fall trip to central Wisconsin and the Wisconsin River Woodcarvers show!

Visit the club online and see photos of all of the winning carvings at wisconsinriverwoodcarvers.org. The next show is scheduled for September 15-16, 2018.

This year, the Conewago Carvers made a concerted effort to invite veterans and folks serving in the active military to their annual woodcarving show, which was held Oct. 28-29, 2017 at the East Berlin (Pa.) Community Center. Veterans were given free admission to the show, and the club reached out to a variety of local veterans organizations to get the word out.

Attendance was up for 2017 with 561 people attending the show. Of that, 100 were veterans or active members of the military.

The club had 90 entries in their competition, and Ivan Snyder took home the best of show with his carved bark house. Bob Hershey’s Pickin’ & Grinnin’ took home second best of show, and Jane Reed earned third best of show with her dragon pyrography on a gourd. Scroll down to see a gallery of these projects.

Woodcarving Illustrated hosted a number of demonstrations at their booth, ranging from caricature carving faces and animals, chip carving, pen turning, and scroll saw basics.

The staff of Woodcarving Illustrated magazine is packing bags and planning routes as we prepare for the event known in the carving world as “The Dayton Show.” Wait, you’re thinking — isn’t it a bit early for that? But no. Artistry in Wood, which is sponsored by the Dayton (Ohio) Carvers Guild, changed its dates and venue last year. The event will be held at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio, on Saturday, October 14, and Sunday, October 15. That’s this week!

The Woodcarving Illustrated booth will be a busy place — stop and visit! The magazine’s editor, Mindy Kinsey, and technical editor, Bob Duncan, will be on hand both days to meet readers and scout for new article ideas. You can also meet our sales team, Michele Sensenig and Ken Ebert.

We will be celebrating Woodcarving Illustrated magazine’s 20th anniversary with cake and special displays. You’ll be able to see projects from recent issues and books. We’ll be giving away free copies of Woodcarving Illustrated, Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts, and the Fox Books catalog. We’re also selling a variety of Fox Chapel Publishing’s popular coloring books.

We’re pleased to note that SIX Fox Chapel Publishing authors will be at the show. Get your books autographed, watch them carve, ask questions, and admire their work! Lori Dickie, the author of Quick & Cute Carving Projects, and Wayne and Jacob Fowler, the father-son duo who wrote Woodworker’s Pattern Book, will both be in the FCP booth. We’ll be happy to introduce you to Floyd Rhadigan, Judy Gale Roberts, Tom Hindes, and Bruce Nicholas, too. We’ll have copies of their books — plus other new titles — available for you to page through, and we’ve made arrangements with on-site vendors to make sure you can purchase your own copies.

This show is well known for its great demonstrations, and this year is no different. They will be held adjacent to our booth, so they’re easy to find. See the list below for details.

We look forward to seeing you at the show — please stop by and say hello!
